Glossary

Every term Indian schools need to know in 2026.

A plain-English glossary covering the 25 terms every Indian school owner, principal and administrator should know in 2026 — from NEP 2020 mandates (APAAR ID, Holistic Progress Card, Academic Bank of Credits) and DPDP Act 2023 privacy obligations to UDISE+ reporting, board-specific patterns (CBSE, ICSE, SEBA, AHSEC), payment rails (UPI, Razorpay, Cashfree), telecom compliance (DLT) and school-ERP architecture concepts (tenant isolation, white-label, SIS vs LMS). Each definition is self-contained and updated for 2026 regulations.

School ERP

Software platform that runs every operational surface of a school in one place.

+
A school ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) is a unified software platform that combines academics, attendance, fee collection, examinations, communication, transport, library, payroll, accounting, reporting and the parent / teacher / student / owner mobile apps in one tenant-isolated system. WEBNIFY is a school ERP. Pricing in India ranges from ₹3 to ₹150 per student per month depending on vendor.
SIS (Student Information System)

Subset of a school ERP focused only on the student record — admissions, profile, marks, attendance.

+
A Student Information System is the subset of a school ERP that handles the student record itself — admission, demographic profile, mark sheets, attendance log, parent contact details. Most Indian school ERPs (including WEBNIFY) bundle the SIS as a module rather than selling it separately.
LMS (Learning Management System)

Content + course delivery platform — different from a school ERP.

+
A Learning Management System hosts course content (videos, PDFs, quizzes, assignments) and tracks learner progress. Examples: Moodle, Canvas, Google Classroom. An LMS is NOT the same thing as a school ERP — the ERP runs school operations, the LMS runs learning content. WEBNIFY is an ERP and integrates with LMSes when needed.
APAAR ID

12-digit lifelong academic ID issued under NEP 2020 — the "Aadhaar for academics".

+
APAAR (Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry) is a 12-digit lifelong academic identifier issued by India's Ministry of Education under NEP 2020. Over 33 crore APAAR IDs have been generated as of 2026 across 15,000+ institutions. WEBNIFY auto-generates and syncs APAAR IDs for every student via DigiLocker integration.
NEP 2020

India's National Education Policy 2020 — foundational reform replacing the 1986 policy.

+
NEP 2020 (National Education Policy) is India's foundational education reform passed in 2020. Key shifts for K-12: 5+3+3+4 structure (replacing 10+2), Holistic Progress Card replacing traditional report cards, APAAR ID for every student, multidisciplinary subject choices, mother-tongue medium of instruction up to Grade 5, and Academic Bank of Credits.
Holistic Progress Card (HPC)

NEP 2020 report card replacing traditional marks — multi-domain progress narrative.

+
The Holistic Progress Card (HPC) is the NEP 2020-mandated replacement for traditional report cards. Instead of just subject marks, the HPC reports academic progress, co-scholastic activities, peer assessment, self-assessment and teacher observation across four life-skill domains. CBSE began rolling it out 2024–2026; state boards align in phases. WEBNIFY ships HPC templates for Foundational, Preparatory, Middle and Secondary stages.
Academic Bank of Credits (ABC)

Digital credit accumulation system keyed to APAAR ID under NEP 2020.

+
The Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) is the digital credit-accumulation system under NEP 2020. Students earn credits as they complete subjects, courses and certifications; the credits are stored against their APAAR ID for life. Currently rolled out in higher education; K-12 alignment is in progress 2026 onwards. WEBNIFY exports ABC-compatible credit metadata for every student.
DPDP Act 2023

India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 — the country's GDPR equivalent.

+
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 is India's comprehensive privacy law. For schools, it mandates: explicit consent for collecting student data, parental consent for minors, right of access / correction / erasure, data-protection officers for "Significant Data Fiduciaries", and breach reporting within 72 hours. WEBNIFY is DPDP-compliant by architecture (see /security).
UDISE+ (UDISE Plus)

India's national school information database — every school must register.

+
UDISE+ (Unified District Information System for Education Plus) is the Ministry of Education's national school database. Every school in India registers and submits annual data on enrolment, infrastructure, staff and outcomes. Most school ERPs (WEBNIFY included) export the annual UDISE+ report from operational data without re-entry.
CBSE

Central Board of Secondary Education — India's largest national school board.

+
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is India's largest national school board, governing ~25,000 affiliated schools and ~25 million students. CBSE administers Class 10 and Class 12 board exams, sets the NCERT-aligned curriculum, and is one of the first boards to adopt NEP 2020 (HPC, APAAR ID).
ICSE / ISC

Indian Certificate of Secondary Education — Class 10 board exam by CISCE.

+
ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) is the Class 10 board examination conducted by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). ISC is the equivalent Class 12 examination. ICSE is known for a broader subject grid and more rigorous English-language assessment than CBSE.
SEBA

Board of Secondary Education, Assam — the state board for Class 10 in Assam.

+
SEBA (Board of Secondary Education, Assam) is the state board governing Class 1-10 in Assam. Class 11-12 is governed by AHSEC. WEBNIFY ships SEBA-aligned mark sheet templates and Assamese parent-app translations for SEBA-medium schools.
AHSEC

Assam Higher Secondary Education Council — Class 11-12 board for Assam.

+
The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) governs Class 11-12 in Assam. AHSEC mark sheet patterns differ from CBSE / ICSE — WEBNIFY auto-formats reports to AHSEC standards for Assam-based schools.
UPI

Unified Payments Interface — India's default real-time payment rail.

+
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is India's real-time interbank payment rail run by NPCI. For schools, it is the default fee-collection rail in 2026 — parents pay from any UPI app, the receipt PDF arrives on WhatsApp in under a second, and the entry auto-reconciles into the school's ledger. WEBNIFY integrates with Razorpay and Cashfree for UPI fee collection.
DLT (Distributed Ledger Telecom)

TRAI's commercial-SMS registry — every school SMS must be DLT-registered.

+
DLT (Distributed Ledger Telecom) is the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's mandatory registry for commercial SMS senders. Every school sending transactional or promotional SMS to parents must register a Principal Entity, Sender ID and message templates with DLT. WEBNIFY ships DLT-compliant templates ready to submit via MSG91 or any registered BSP.
GPS attendance

Geofence-based staff attendance — replaces biometric punch-in machines.

+
GPS attendance (geofenced staff attendance) lets teachers punch in from their phone while inside a virtual school-perimeter geofence (typically 50-metre radius). Replaces biometric machines: no queues, no hardware, anti-spoofing detection blocks rooted devices. WEBNIFY ships GPS attendance for every school.
Gamified learning

XP / quests / chests / streaks layered onto academic activity.

+
Gamified learning applies game mechanics — experience points (XP), levels, daily quests, mystery chests, streak tracking, leaderboards — to academic activity. Pilot schools using WEBNIFY's gamification engine report 9–14% attendance improvement within a single term.
Tenant isolation

Multi-school SaaS pattern where each school's data is filtered at the database query layer.

+
Tenant isolation is the architectural pattern where a multi-school SaaS keeps each school's data invisible to every other school. WEBNIFY enforces this by adding a `db` column to every model and filtering every query by it before any data is read. A school in Guwahati cannot see a school in Delhi by accident — the isolation is structural, not a permission flag.
White-label

Each school gets its own branding + subdomain — students never see the vendor name.

+
White-label school ERP means each school gets its own branding (logo, colours, name) and its own subdomain (e.g. `<schoolname>.webnify.co.in`) so students and parents see the school's identity, not the ERP vendor's. WEBNIFY ships white-labelling included in the per-student price.
Parent app

Mobile app for parents — fee receipts, attendance alerts, marksheets, homework.

+
A parent app is the mobile / web surface that parents use to see their child's school data — daily attendance, fee receipts, mark sheets, homework, exam schedules, holiday calendar. WEBNIFY ships a parent web app accessible from any browser plus WhatsApp delivery for high-priority notifications.
Owner dashboard

Live school-operations cockpit for the principal / trustee — cash, free teachers, queue.

+
The owner dashboard is the live cockpit for the principal, trustee or school owner. WEBNIFY ships seven default tiles: cash-in-hand today, free-teacher substitution, admissions queue with SLA timers, live class monitor, daily 8 PM digest, anomaly flags and class-wise attendance heat map.
Razorpay

Indian payment gateway — UPI, cards, net-banking, wallets.

+
Razorpay is one of India's leading payment gateways, supporting UPI, cards, net-banking and wallets. WEBNIFY uses Razorpay as the default fee-collection gateway. Schools sign up directly with Razorpay (no markup from WEBNIFY) and paste API keys into the WEBNIFY settings.
Cashfree Payments

Alternative Indian payment gateway with instant settlement.

+
Cashfree Payments is WEBNIFY's second-line payment partner. Schools that prefer instant settlement (T+0), lower MDR on RuPay, or specific bank-tie-up advantages can swap Razorpay for Cashfree without changing any school-side workflow.
WhatsApp Business API

Programmatic WhatsApp messaging — fee receipts, attendance alerts, exam schedules to parents.

+
WhatsApp Business API (via approved BSPs like Gupshup, Twilio, or Meta direct) lets schools deliver high-value parent messages — fee receipts, daily attendance alerts, exam schedules, homework summaries — directly to parents on WhatsApp with read-receipt tracking. WEBNIFY integrates with WhatsApp Business API out of the box.
CCE

Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation — pre-NEP-2020 assessment pattern.

+
CCE (Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation) is the pre-NEP-2020 assessment pattern many CBSE schools still run in hybrid form: FA1, FA2, SA1, FA3, FA4, SA2 weighted appropriately. NEP 2020 is phasing CCE into the Holistic Progress Card. WEBNIFY supports both patterns in parallel during the transition.
